Functions Of Engine Control Module

The engine control module, is also known as engine control unit or power train control module, is a small computerized unit that monitors all of the engine’s components, including the emissions system and timing. Other systems and parts will be affected if the engine control module is damaged.

 • Timing :
The engine control module regulates the timing of the spark that comes from the combustion chamber to start the engine. It adjusts the timing when problems arise.

 • Fuel :
The release of fuel during acceleration is adjusted by the engine control module. It detects the amount of air flowing into the engine when the gas pedal is pressed and sends a signal to the fuel system to inject fuel accordingly.

 • Control of variable valve timing
Some engines have Variable Valve Timing. In such engines, the ECU controls the time in the engine cycle at which the valves open. The valves are commonly opened sooner at higher speed than at lower speed. This can monitor the flow of air into the cylinder, increasing power and fuel economy.

• Other Functions :
The module balances the idle speed of a vehicle. It also maintains the speed set by cruise control. If there are any issues with other automotive components, the module can detect them and then produce computerized codes that represent the malfunctioning parts. These codes are read by mechanics through a diagnostic tool, which makes easier to identify a specific issue.

Modern ECU :
Modern ECUs use a microprocessor which can process the inputs from the enginesensors in real-time. An electronic control unit contains the hardware and software (firmware). The hardware consists of electronic components on a printed circuit board (PCB), ceramic substrate or a thin laminate substrate. The important component on this circuit board is a microcontroller chip (CPU). The software is stored in the micro controller or other chips on the PCB, typically in EPROMs or flash memory so the CPU can be re-programmed by uploading updated code or replacing
chips. This is also referred to as an (electronic) Engine Management System (EMS). Modern ECUs sometimes include features like cruise control, transmission control, anti-skid brake control, and anti-theft control, etc.
